Frequently Asked Questions
How much do managed IT services cost for a small business in New Jersey?
Cost depends on how many staff and devices you have and which level of support your business needs. Lifeline offers three managed IT plans. Essentials covers 24-hour monitoring and alerts, automated patch management, ransomware detection, security updates and asset inventory. Enhanced adds remote and onsite support, firewall and network management, vendor coordination, technology procurement and quarterly server health checks. Elite adds advanced email and endpoint security, full Microsoft 365 management and Acronis cloud backup. You pay a predictable monthly amount, which makes IT easier to budget for than one-off repair bills. Our Plans and Pricing page sets out what each plan includes.
What happens when we switch from our current IT provider?
Switching follows a structured process over the first 90 days. In the first two weeks we run a kickoff call to understand your business, complete a full handover and document your systems, users and vendors, run initial security checks on MFA, backups and access, and begin monitoring. Between weeks two and six we verify and test your backups, configure security tools, deploy patch management and address immediate risks. From week six to month three we review what we found, identify priorities and plan for hardware upgrades. Most businesses start seeing what is actually happening in their environment within the first couple of weeks. We’ve written about what to expect in your first 90 days with a new IT provider in more detail.
How quickly can we get help when something goes wrong?
Monitoring runs around the clock, so system alerts are picked up and acted on outside office hours. When you need to speak to someone, you reach a Lifeline technician directly during business hours. There is no call center, no ticket queue routed offshore, and no bouncing between departments. Because the same small team works on your environment month after month, whoever picks up already knows your setup. Support is delivered remotely and onsite depending on what the issue needs.
Which New Jersey towns does Lifeline cover?
Our main office is at 331 Centennial Avenue in Cranford, and we work with businesses within roughly 25 miles of there. That includes Cranford, Westfield, Clark, Summit, Scotch Plains and surrounding Union County towns. We also have a second office at 12 Lower Center Street in Clinton, which supports businesses in the western part of the state. Being local means a technician can be onsite when a problem needs hands on the hardware.
What is the difference between managed IT and calling someone when something breaks?
Break-fix support means you pay for help after a problem has already interrupted your business. Managed IT means your systems are monitored and maintained continuously, so most issues are caught during routine maintenance instead of during your working day. The cost difference is less obvious than it looks. A six-hour outage at a 20-person firm with an average loaded cost of $35 per hour represents $4,200 in payroll where no productive work is happening, before any repair invoice arrives. Our article on what reactive IT actually costs your business works through that calculation in full.
Are we locked into a long-term contract?
No. Lifeline Technology Solutions works on month-to-month agreements. You are not signing a multi-year commitment to find out whether the relationship works. We take the view that a provider should keep your business by being responsive and useful, and clients who have been with us for years have stayed because the service holds up.
We already use Microsoft 365 with multi-factor authentication. Do we need anything else?
Multi-factor authentication is an important protection and every business should have it turned on. It stops attacks that rely on a stolen password. What it does not stop are attacks that happen after a user has already logged in, such as phishing pages that capture an authenticated session, browser token theft, or hidden inbox rules created after an attacker gets access. Microsoft 365 provides solid infrastructure, though email filtering, MFA enforcement, admin access restrictions and account monitoring all need deliberate configuration. We’ve covered why MFA on its own isn’t enough and what actually protects small businesses in New Jersey for businesses working through this.
Do you help plan for hardware replacement, or only fix things when they fail?
Planning is part of managed IT. Most business servers last four to six years and workstations typically last three to five, so equipment reaching the end of that window is predictable well in advance. Quarterly server health checks and annual reviews are built into the Enhanced and Elite plans, which means aging equipment gets flagged before it becomes an outage. Replacing devices on a staggered schedule also avoids the situation where a business faces a large unplanned expense because everything was bought at the same time and reaches end of life together. Our guide to hardware lifecycle planning for New Jersey businesses covers how to build that schedule.
